Typically you’d see me wearing a sports watch in my running posts. But at work or other occasions, it’s sometimes nice to switch it up for something understated and not running related like the Nordgreen Pioneer watch.
Nordgreen is a Danish brand that was founded by two friends, Pascar and Vasilij, which is focused on quality timepieces and increasing awareness around sustainability.
Before I start discussing the features, my favourite part of the brands ethos (which I’ve already touched upon) is the emphasis on social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
These are key to their brand identity. With every purchase you can donate part of that purchase to one of three causes from health, education or the environment.
All watches come with a custom tracking number engraved on the back that allows you to see the progress made by your donation to your selected cause. To find out more click this link.
Nordgreen’s watches, are designed by Jakob Wagner, who is a respected Scandinavian designer, with over 20 years of experience who has worked previously for Bang & Olufsen, Muuto, and B&B Italia.
In designing the Pioneer, Wagner took the minimalist and classic design and integrated it into the Pioneer, which is a redesign of its popular model the Native. Whilst staying true to Nordgreen’s identity.
The Pioneer has a 42mm body that has two Chronograph dials. A Chronograph is just another word for stopwatch. So the extra two buttons are to start/stop, then to reset. The two subtle subdials help you count down the seconds (right dial) and the minutes (left dial).
Beneath the chronograph dials above the 6 o’clock position is a circular space for the date.
The Pioneer has a stainless steel body with a Japanese Miyota Quartz movement on the inside, with a sapphire crystal covering. It’s water resistant up to 5 atmospheres (ATM). Essentially this means it’s rain resistant. But you take it off in case your scuba diving or undertaking high-speed watersports, just in case the moment takes you.
The watches is available in 3 dial colors in white, blue and black, and 4 face colors in gold, silver, gunmetal and rose gold (which is shown in the photos). Additionally it comes with interchangeable straps from nylon, rubber, metallic mesh and various leather straps, including a Vegan leather option, which re-emphasises Nordgreen’s values towards sustainability.
Depending on your choice the Pioneer starts from £219. Or the classically designed Native starts from £134.
Nordgreen is more than just a watchmaker. The Pioneer is a stunning watch, but on a wider level, it places high value on awareness of social issues.
